When I think back on my childhood and about Macaroni and Cheese, the first thing that comes to mind is the orange powder packet in Kraft Mac n Cheese. That was some interesting stuff. Reminder me of finely ground Cheeto dust.
The Kraft Macaroni and Cheese Deluxe is a different beast. It costs approximately three times what the original does. The box is about the same height but much bulkier. And it states on the box, that the Macaroni and Cheese is made with REAL cheese and has no artificial flavors or dyes.
I like that.
The pasta is larger than the small elbows that come with the original. This gives a nicer mouth feel when eating. The cheese sauce comes in a bag and is very thick until mixed with the warm pasta.
Overall cook time; from opening the box to eating the first mouthful takes about 15 minutes. Not bad at all.
I like to cook pasta so it still has a bite to it. I can not stand when pasta is overcooked and is more like a slimy booger than pasta. I drained the pasta, added it back to the pan I cooked it in, snipped the corner of the Cheese Sauce pouch and squeezed the thick, gelatinous white cheddar over the pasta. After about one minute of stirring I had Macaroni and Cheese Deluxe.
The Mac n Cheese is creamy and has a good flavor. The white cheddar comes through and so does the bacon flavor. It is good on it’s own, but this wold make a great side for grilled chicken or barbequed ribs. Very tasty.
While this isn’t what you would get from making Mac n Cheese from scratch, it is a huge step up from the orange powder packet.
I would recommend this to anyone.
